Dave Stieb #775

 

This week... Toronto Blue Jays legend Dave Stieb! Stieb was an All American outfielder for SIU Saluki Baseball. He only pitched 17 innings before the Jays drafted him. A 7x All Star, Stieb had the most Baseball Reference Wins Above Replacement  (48.1) of any pitcher in the 1980s and 2nd most Wins (140). He was with the Blue Jays from a 109 loss 1979 through to their first title in 1992. He had 4 near miss no-hitters before finally getting the first no-no in Blue Jays history!

Phil Bradley #55/519/18T

 

We discussed 3 Phil Bradley cards this week! Phil was a record breaking Mizzou Football QB before starting a career with the Seattle Mariners.. He was an All Star in 1985 hitting 26 homers with a .300 average. He spent 8 seasons in MLB and one with Yomiuri Giants in NPB. Phil has some sweet Mimsbandz, LLC  wristbands on the team leader card!

Larry Andersen #342

 

This week, we talked about a prankster slider throwing righty, once traded 1 for 1 for future HOFer Jeff Bagwell. It’s Larry Andersen! The right handed reliever pitched for 17 seasons, racking up 699 appearances, 995 innings and a career 3.15 ERA (121 ERA+). We also consulted some Philadelphia Phillies fans about Larry’s announcing style!

Andre Dawson #500/401

 

We came back with a big name, "The Hawk" Andre Dawson! Requested by a young listener who loves Andre Dawson in RBI Baseball. One of the best players in Montreal Expos history. A Hall of Famer, Hawk was 1987 NL MVP after hitting 49 Homers and driving in 137 for the last place Chicago Cubs. He hit over 400 homers, had over 300 stolen bases, and won 8 Gold Gloves! Truly a legend of the game.

Terry Steinbach #551

 

This week, the 1988 All Star Game MVP...it's Terry Steinbach! Terry was voted the all star starter even though in his words he “wasn’t hitting worth crap.” He was the first prominent player to wear a c-flap helmet to protect his orbital bone. The New Ulm, Minnesota native played for the University of Minnesota (as a 3B) along with his 2 brothers! He was drafted by the Oakland Athletics, switched to catcher, played 14 seasons, made 3 All Star games, 3 straight World Series, and closed out a very good career back home with the Minnesota Twins!

Kevin Elster #8

 

This week's card...Kevin Elster! Elster came up with the New York Mets in 1986, played in the World Series...then went back to AAA, but was still a Future Star in 1988! He played for 13 seasons, set an errorless record, had a big 1996 and a chill retirement. In 2000, after a year out of baseball he came back for the Dodgers and hit the first home run in PacBell Park...a 3 homer day to spoil the Giants opener!

Terry Puhl #587

 

In honor of Canada Day, we discussed our second Canadian in the 88 Topps Set! From Melville, Saskatchewan, it's Terry Puhl! He only made 1 All Star team, but for a short stretch (1978-1980) Terry was one of the best outfielders in baseball...and Melville celebrated! A very good hitter, strong baserunner, and outstanding outfielder, in 2022 he was also inducted into the Houston Astros Hall of Fame!
