Randy hit .309 and was valued at 5.8 WAR in 1987 while dealing with the aftermath of his wife suffering a 1986 heart attack that left her with severe brain damage. Ready and Doreen had 3 kids that Randy had to care for all while putting together his best season. “I don’t know what’s going on in that little man’s head, but something is definitely clicking that keeps him going. That man is tough” Tony Gwynn said. Ready played in 13 MLB seasons and later managed in the minors for multiple organizations and served as the Padres hitting coach.
